Elderly Man with Terminal Cancer Walks Out of Hospice after Treatment with Cannabis Oil – Healthy Holistic Living

“After nine months of taking two different forms of cannabis oil, one, a cannabis capsule infused with organic coconut oil around 10:30am and high THC oil about an hour before bed, dad was given the life changing report, “No evidence of recurrent disease”.” [2]

Stan Found Cannabis after Chemo and Radiation Almost Killed Him

The trillion dollar burn, cut, poison, Cancer Industrial Complex boldly proclaims that chemotherapy and radiation routinely save lives – that their toxic interventions boost long-term survival rates and the biggest lie of all: chemo and radiation exclusively target cancerous cells and leave healthy cells alone.

All these statements by the cancer industry are patently false. Poison is poison; it kills indiscriminately. Chemo and radiation are poisons posing as medicine. In fact, mainstream cancer “treatment” is the leading cause of secondary cancers.

Dave Mihalovic a Naturopathic Doctor who specializes in vaccine research, cancer prevention and a holistic approach to cancer treatment stated:

“No chemotherapy drug has ever actually cured or resolved the underlying causes of cancer. Even what mainstream medicine considers “successful” chemotherapy treatments are only managing symptoms, usually at the cost of interfering with other precious physiological functions in patients that will cause side effects down the road.” [1]

Ironically, when chemo is killing cancer cells, it’s also stimulating healthy cells to produce a protein that supports tumor growth and makes the cells resistant to further cancer treatment.

Researchers Discover One of the Ways Chemo Enhances Cancer Growth

“The scientists found that healthy cells damaged by chemotherapy secreted more of a protein called WNT16B which boosts cancer cell survival.

“The increase in WNT16B was completely unexpected,” study co-author Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle told AFP.

The protein was taken up by tumor cells neighboring the damaged cells.
“WNT16B, when secreted, would interact with nearby tumor cells and cause them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy,” said Nelson.

In cancer treatment, tumors often respond well initially, followed by rapid regrowth and then resistance to further chemotherapy.” [1]

The Stan Rutner Story

Rutner31

Stan and Barbara Rutner are a devoted, couple who have been together 59 years. They both have hard-won experience battling cancer. Roughly 25 years ago, Stan, a retired dentist with a lucrative mini-storage business was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, while Barb had successfully battled breast cancer twice. Stan remembers:”I just thought I had a cold, flu, type thing. That was it . . . I wasn’t thinking cancer at all.” [3]

After six months of aggressive, standard allopathic, treatment, Stan’s cancer was in remission – that was back in 1989. Meanwhile, Stan had moved on with his life; his bout with cancer faded into the deep dark recesses of his memory. Of course, Stan didn’t expect after all those years of remission he’d be fighting cancer again in 2011 but as mentioned above that’s not uncommon for those who undergo conventional cancer treatment. His initial symptom this time was a persistent cough, otherwise he seemed fine.

Somewhat concerned he made a doctor’s appointment. The initial diagnosis was early stage pneumonia. The doctor noted that there were some unusual looking spots on his lungs that needed follow-up, after the pneumonia had cleared. Numerous tests later and revealed the “spots” were cancerous nodes in the lungs. But there’s more. Stan’s final diagnosis: Stage 4 Lung Cancer with Metastasis to the Brain. Stan recalled how his doctor broke the news, ‘You’re in deep shit.’ Stan explained. “Yeah, he didn’t sugar coat it at all.” But it gets worse much worse. Down the road doctors discovered that the cancer had metastasized to his brain. [3]

Stan’s Health and Quality of life Rapidity Declined

This time, the chemotherapy and radiation, really took a heavy toll on Stan. Shortly after treatment began [march-April of 2012] Stan was plagued with debilitating fatigue, wasting away, weight loss and chronic nausea. Not a pretty picture especially for someone pushing 80.

Barb Rutner: “After that he was wiped out. He was very thin. So we finished radiation to his brain on June 25, and on July 13 he entered the hospital for the first time with radiation pneumonitis (inflammation of the lungs due to radiation therapy), so pneumonia. There were three hospital visits during that time, and on the third they kept him for a week and started him on oxygen 24/7. And then he went into palliative care.” [3]

Stan’s doctors gave him only weeks to live and ordered him to hospice, which he entered on August 12, 2011

The Rutners also used alternative treatments to ease Stan’s suffering and perhaps stall his “inevitable” death sentence. Stan tried Reiki energy treatments and acupuncture. He even attempted creative visualization but it wasn’t his thing and it didn’t really help him, although Barb had success with it when she was fighting breast cancer. Stan’s downward spiral continued unabated and time was running out. That’s when Corrine – Stan and Barb’s daughter and Corinne’s soon to be husband, John Malanca started researching cannabis as a possible treatment option for Stan.

Barb explains: “Corinne and John were becoming interested in medicinal marijuana but we were concerned that Stan was wasting away. He had lost so much weight and so we were anxious to get his appetite improved and help him with the nausea. So Corinne suggested daytime cannabis capsule infused with coconut oil; they’re yellow capsules that he started taking. He started taking those in early November of 2011 and in the beginning, he took about a third of a capsule in the morning, and it was about a week or two later that he was able to give up the extra oxygen that he had had 24/7.”[3]

Stan was ready to try cannabis – he realized better than anyone else that he had nothing to lose and maybe a lot to gain.
Stan stated: “No hesitation at all. Here I’m dying and getting nothing to change the course of things and so this thing has a pretty good track record in—what do you call it—in a non-medical world, so hey let’s try it. Got nothing to lose.” [3]

Stan’s Amazing Turnaround

Bingo! Within a couple of weeks of starting cannabis, Stan’s condition was improving in all ways. He started gaining weight, his sleep improved, he was regaining his strength. Eventually he ditched his walker, dumped his oxygen and started exercise classes. Barb described his progress as remarkable.

After several months of Cannabis Stan decided to get an MRI to check his progress

Barb: “On January 27, 2013 we received the results of Stan’s brain MRI in an email from his oncologist, stating simply: “IMPRESSION: No evidence of recurrent disease.” The lung cancer that had metastasized to his brain in the summer of 2011 (and nearly taken his life) was GONE! The doctor calls him a miracle man. We are deeply grateful to his “team” of doctors, friends and family, but we’ll always believe that cannabis turned the tide.” [3]

Autistic Boy Gains Ability to Speak After Just 2 Days of Cannabis Oil Treatment | Health Nut News

At 10 months of age, Kalel Santiago of Puerto Rico was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma. He endured chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and surgery for two years—and survived. Then he was diagnosed with something permanent: severe autism that disabled him from speaking.

“While he was in the hospital, we noticed he didn’t speak at all and had some behavior that wasn’t right, like hand flapping, and walking on his toes,” his father Abiel Gomez Santiago told Yahoo News. “But we waited until he was 3 and cancer-free to look at his behavior.”

According to Yahoo, “He and his wife Gladys — also parents to two older boys, now 18 and 20 — did a cram course in educating themselves on autism. They tried various schools and therapies and eventually found impressive success with a unique surf-therapy school near their home.”

Eventually, the Santiago family stumbled upon a treatment of real potency and potential: CBD oil.

Through a fundraising program, they were able to receive a tiny bottle of the oil. Kalel was given oral doses twice a day.

Within just two days, he was finally able to speak. “He surprised us in school by saying the vowels, A-E-I-O-U. It was the first time ever,” Abiel said. “You can’t imagine the emotion we had, hearing Kalel’s voice for the first time. It was amazing. The teacher recorded him and sent it to my wife and me and we said well, the only different thing we have been doing is using the CBD.”

Soon after, he began using consonants, too, speaking like his parents never thought possible.

“He said, ‘amo mi mama,’ ‘I love my mom,’” Abiel says. “I don’t know how to thank [the CBD oil makers].”

Kalel’s story is yet another piece of evidence piling onto the mountain of support for cannabis oil and full marijuana legalization. Please share this with as many people as possible!

National Guard, DEA & State Police Just Raided An 81-Year Old Cancer Patient’s Organic Garden To ‘Protect’ You

Edgartown, MA — In a gross display of wasted taxpayer dollars, dozens of Massachusetts National Guard personnel, operating under a grant from the DEA, alongside Massachusetts State Police, descended into the backyard of an 81-year-old cancer patient in a raid last week — to protect society from the dangers of his four marijuana plants.

Paul Jackson, 81, of Martha’s Vineyard, grows cannabis to make medicine. His plants, along with several other plants, became the target of law enforcement last week in a crackdown on hardened criminals who’d dare to grow a plant that helps them.

Jackson was in his backyard last Tuesday when plainclothes men and a helicopter descended on his property. With no warrant, and without showing identification, these heroes ripped Jackson’s plants from the ground.

“They just come charging through and start cutting it down,” Jackson said in an interview with the MV Times.

According to the MV Times, Mr. Jackson, a lifelong Islander and renowned organic gardener with over 300 ribbons from the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Fair, expressed both bewilderment and disgust when he spoke to The Times on Friday.

“I told them they don’t know what they’re doing, they’re destroying it and it could be used for good purposes,” he said. “I know because I went through it before. You wrote about it in The Times. I had the article framed, took it out to show them; I said, ‘This is proof of what it does,’ but they didn’t want to hear it.”

As the Times reports, Mr. Jackson was referring to a February 2013 article,” Love, life, and death: A Martha’s Vineyard marijuana story,” in which he described how cannabis tea had helped Mary, his wife of 53 years, through the pain of pancreatic cancer and the ravages of chemotherapy. Mr. Jackson said they forsook the morphine prescribed by her doctors, and substituted cannabis tea for pain management.

“I never ever saw pain in her face,” he said. “She was eating and happy, right up until she died. You had to see it to believe it. People don’t understand it. It’s a beautiful plant and it works beautifully.”

For years, Jackson has been growing this beneficial plant to help his wife, himself, and other friends in the area.

“There’s another fellow I’ve given it to, his wife has cancer bad,” he said. “They mix it with her food and it’s really helping her. Another fellow had a tube down his stomach and his wife would pour [tea] down his tube for the pain. And it worked. At least there’s no damn pain in it. I gave another guy some, he was taking seven different pills a day. I talked to him a month later and he said he’d gotten rid of three of those pills. It works on all kinds of different things.”

However, these poor people will now suffer thanks to the public service provided by the government in their attempts to stamp out this miraculous plant.

While medical marijuana is legal in Massachusetts, to a certain extent, Jackson says he grows his own because it’s far healthier.

“The people that are selling it are using chemicals that react with the chemotherapy,” he said. “Mine is much better because it’s organically grown. I saw it with my own eyes, I couldn’t believe how well it worked.”

In the interview, Jackson noted that he doesn’t smoke the plant and will continue to consume it, in spite of the immoral laws that prohibit it.

“I don’t like smoke and I don’t like dust,” he said. “We just make tea out of it. But if I need to make the tea, I’ve got it. I don’t sell it. I will continue to have a certain amount in case somebody close to me needs it.”

When word began to spread about this embarrassing action to eradicate a beneficial plant, spokesmen from the agencies involved in the raid began denying they had a hand in it.

After their heroic mission to rid Martha’s Vineyard of cannabis, Colonel James Sahady, Public Affairs Officer for the Massachusetts National Guard, said in an email to the Times, “The order was initiated by the DEA and Massachusetts State Police as part of pre-planned eradication missions throughout the year.”

However, Sahady later issued another statement claiming that the DEA was not involved.

On top of the National Guard’s flip-flop, the Times reports:

On Tuesday, two Massachusetts State Police spokesmen checked into the matter and said there was no evidence of State Police involvement. “It was not us,” Officer Tom Ryan told The Times.

In a follow up email received on Thursday, State Police spokesman David Procopio said the operation was initiated by the State Police. “We routinely request the assistance of the National Guard in these operations,” Mr. Procopio said in an email to The Times. “Our Narcotics Inspection Section conducts these operations regularly across the state. We utilize a trained spotter in a helicopter to search for marijuana grow sites. Once one is located, the spotter directs ground units to the plants, which are confiscated and taken by State Police for eventual destruction. These seizures occasionally result in criminal prosecutions, but many times do not, if the plants are seized from rural or wooded areas that can be accessed by many people (as opposed to just growing in some homeowner’s backyard).”

Mr. Procopio said State Police seized 392 plants, “which are slated for destruction as part of our next narcotics burn.”

Although the helicopter was parked at Martha’s Vineyard Airport last Tuesday night, there are no records of landing fees or fuel purchases paid by a government agency, according to airport manager Ann Crook.

“The idea we’re so frivolously spending money on marijuana interdiction, especially now when it’s about to be rolled back, is extremely frustrating. How many books or school lunches could have been bought instead of having these plants ripped up?” Bill Downing, spokesman for MassCan/NORML said to the Times.

Downing’s sentiment is a very real concern as the war on drugs has spent upwards of a trillion taxpayer dollars since its inception. Every one of those dollars spent ruining the lives of otherwise entirely innocent people.

At any one time, 59,300 prisoners charged with or convicted of violating marijuana laws are behind bars. Of those, 17,000 are behind bars for possession ONLY, not trafficking.

Enforcing marijuana laws costs an estimated $10-15 billion in direct costs alone — not to mention the sustained costs of incarceration of the individual who has done nothing to harm anyone. It is estimated that the money spent enforcing useless marijuana laws is double what we spend on education in this country.

Countless lives are ruined every year as the state locks people away or worse, for possessing a plant. The time is now to end this violent ridiculousness before another innocent life is ruined or taken in the name of controlling what people can put in their own bodies.

DEA Delays Decision to Reschedule Marijuana..Again!

The agency now calling marijuana homegrows “new meth labs”

Marijuana

By Julie Fidler, Natural Society

Right now, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug, right alongside heroin, LSD, peyote, and ecstasy.

That’s more than a little ridiculous, considering Schedule I drugs are classified as such because they have “no medical use and a high potential for abuse.”

We know that marijuana does, in fact, have numerous medical uses.

Advocates had high hopes (no pun intended) that the DEA would reschedule marijuana down to a Schedule II drug sometime this summer at the urging of a group of Democratic senators. The agency had said in a memo to lawmakers that it would decide whether to make the long-overdue move “in the first half of 2016.”

We are now in the 2nd half of 2016, and the DEA just announced it was delaying the decision, yet again. The organization is now also saying that marijuana homegrows are “the new meth houses.” [1]

Take California, for instance. In that state, laws prohibit the use of butane as part of the chemical process to create marijuana extracts. These extracts are used in oils and marijuana products – pretty much anything you can’t roll or put in a bong.

Of course, butane is used in lighters and is a highly flammable substance. Butane accidents are nasty, and some burn centers reported in 2015 that 10% of their cases were the results of butane-related hash oil explosions.

This year, under California’s butane prohibition law, hash oil extractors operating legally under the state’s medical marijuana laws, have had their facilities raided, there have been arrests, and facilities have been shut down, and some companies have faced civil asset forfeiture.

Now, usually this law applies to shutting down meth labs, but California law enforcement has been applying the law to hash manufacturing, as well. In some of the raids, DEA officials were on hand or involved in the raids.

Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level; however, there is a federal regulation that is intended to prevent the DEA from interfering or enforcing federal bans in states where marijuana has been legalized.

Officials claim the facilities are operating illegally, and not in compliance with how California set up its program. [2]

Marijuana Grows are Like Meth Labs?

Yes, butane accidents occur, but comparing marijuana grows to meth labs? Apart from butane, marijuana grows use dirt and water. Meth labs, on the other hand, well… let’s take a look at some of the ingredients commonly found in methamphetamine:

  • Acetone – found in nail polish remover and paint thinners)
  • Lithium – from batteries, such as those in laptops and cell phones
  • Toluene – solvent used as fuel additive, in paint thinners, nail polish, brake cleaner
  • Hydrochloric acid – a highly corrosive mineral acid used to remove rust from steel and fine metal
  • Pseudoephedrine – found in cold medicines (meth labs are the reason why pseudoephedrine-containing cold medicines are locked behind pharmacy doors and no longer available on store shelves)
  • Red phosphorus – found in explosives like road flares and on matchboxes
  • Sodium hydroxide – also called lye, which is found in drain cleaners
  • Sulfuric acid – found in toilet bowl and drain cleaners
  • Anhydrous ammonia – found in fertilizer and countertop cleaners
  • Lantern fuel or lighter fluid (butane)
  • Ether – found in starting fluid
  • Antifreeze
  • Iodine crystals [3]

Once you take a look at this list, you start to understand why so many meth labs blow up. Residues from methamphetamine and the chemicals used to make it often linger in homes used as meth labs and can cause serious health problems. [4]

One thing you don’t hear about: exploding marijuana grows.

A friend of mine who lives in California is renting a house that used to be a marijuana homegrow. Unlike a meth lab, the only thing leftover from the grow is fabulous soil that is sprouting enormous tomatoes for my friend and her roommates.

According to the DEA’s report comparing marijuana grows to meth labs, homegrown marijuana “presents potential risk to the occupants, homeowners, and neighbors of these residences, as well as to first responders who are called to them.”

The report goes on to say:

“Marijuana grows often cause extensive damage to the houses where they are maintained and are increasingly the causes of house fires, blown electrical transformers, and environmental damage.”

The agency also says local police “often receive numerous calls from neighbors about marijuana grow houses. Common complaints include strong odors, excessive noise from industrial air-conditioning units, blown electrical transformers, and heavy vehicle traffic.”

But Mason Tvert, of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), points out that in Colorado, where marijuana is legal for both medical and recreational use, most of the marijuana growing has transitioned from homes and into “tightly controlled facilities.”

Tvert also points out that “If an adult is doing it [growing marijuana] privately and in accordance with state laws, it is no more dangerous than an adult brewing his or her own beer.” [5]

The DEA Should Stop Running from the Facts

If the DEA were to stop running from the facts about marijuana and rescheduled it from anything other than a Schedule I substance, it would finally be acknowledged for having healing properties, which would allow doctors nationwide to prescribe medical marijuana for patients.

People have some very strongly-held opinions about marijuana, but here are a few of the facts about this powerful healing plant:

This is a very small list of the health benefits of cannabis.

What is the DEA so afraid of? Why does it keep avoiding rescheduling marijuana, and why does it try to skirt federal regulations?

Until the DEA joins the 21st Century, patients around the country will have to wait and wonder when they will get their chance to treat their pain with one of the most natural medications on the planet.

Colorado Homicides drop more than 66% after marijuana legalized

Homicide in Colorado drops more than 66% after marijuana legalized

After dire predictions about what would happen if marijuana were legalized, new data collected from the Colorado Department of Public Safety suggests that certain crime rates have fallen by large amounts. As RT reports:

Less than six months into the experiment that Colorado took up by legalizing marijuana, state officials have released new data indicating that crime has fallen across a number of demographics since January 1.

The Colorado Department of Public Safety released data through the end of February indicating that not only has the doomsday scenario that law enforcement officials predicted not come true, but crime has fallen by significant margins.

Compared to the same time period in 2013, overall property crime fell by 14.6 percent in Denver. Homicide rates, while not leaving the single digits in either year, fell by 66.7 percent while the number of robberies decreased by seven percent.

If legalizing marijuana doesn’t create a new crime hellscape out of cities, then opponents may have just lost their last talking point.

An Open Letter to President Obama

Dear Mr. President,

 Featured Image -- 381

In light of recent events, you have an opportunity, dare I say an obligation, to fundamentally change America in a profound manner. You can enact an Executive Order that can solve some of this country’s biggest problems, and right some of our most egregious wrongs.

The acts described below are all interconnected and provide the foundation for a new beginning in American history. I fervently hope you will use your powers to transform our country in these meaningful and vitally important ways now!

The first step is to declare an end to the War on Drugs, most specifically an immediate decriminalization of all forms of cannabis and its non-psychoactive cousin, hemp. This act can take a bite out of racism in America and set the course for a more peaceful, non-violent nation.

Informed individuals understand that the “War on Marijuana” is largely a war on people of color, and has imprisoned millions of minorities for victimless crimes. Let’s review the facts:

  • Amount spent annually in the U.S. on the war on drugs:

          More than $51,000,000,000

  • Number of arrests in 2014 in the U.S. for drug law violations:

          1,561,231

  • Number of these arrests that were for possession only:

          1,297,384 (83 percent)

  • Number of arrests in 2014 in the U.S. for marijuana violations:

          700,993

  • Number of these arrests that were for possession only:

          619,809 (88 percent)

  • Proportion of black or Latino people incarcerated for a drug offense in state prison, although these groups use and sell drugs at similar rates as whites:

          57 Percent

  • Tax revenue that drug legalization would yield annually, if currently-illegal drugs were taxed at rates comparable to those on alcohol and tobacco:

          $46.7 billion

  • Number of people in the U.S. who have acquired AIDS directly or indirectly from syringe sharing:

360,836 people, or 30% of all people diagnosed w/AIDS in the U.S.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that syringe access programs lower HIV incidence among people who inject drugs by:

          80 percent

  • U.S. federal government support for syringe access programs:

$0.00, thanks to a federal ban reinstated by Congress in 2011 that prohibits any federal assistance for this program

Mr. President, we propose a new paradigm for America, where we have a war on violence instead of a war on minorities and our populous in general. Usher in a new day in America and encourage an environment of tolerance regarding personal freedom, but a society in which violent activity of any sort will simply no longer be tolerated, and will be severely punished.

By ending the prohibition on cannabis and hemp, you can help end a racist law that targets minorities and creates a fear of police felt on every urban street corner in America. This action can help erase 80 years of hatred, bigotry and propaganda, while also creating jobs, developing affordable housing, and improving education.

Our 8-part plan calls for a new way of thinking, along with the following actions:

  1. End the prohibition on cannabis and hemp
  2. Tax and regulate cannabis, just like alcohol and tobacco
  3. Encourage hemp farming and its use in a multitude of products
  4. Release marijuana possession prisoners from prison
  5. Create Back-to-Work Empowerment programs that offer former cannabis prisoners employment in the cannabis and hemp industries and extend these programs to others in need of meaningful opportunity.
  6. Use some of the taxes raised from legalized cannabis to fund education programs that retrain Police Officers to become Peace Officers, and facilitate an end to racism, ethnic profiling, random pat-downs, and extreme violence on American citizens.
  7. Appropriate funds from the cannabis tax to rehabilitate some of the 18 million vacant homes in America and make them available to the homeless and low income families and individuals (there are 3.5 million homeless people in America)
  8. End the war on drugs and use resources for compassionate care and rehabilitation. Prison shouldn’t be for people with addictions.

Mr. President, it’s time to end “politics as usual.” It’s time to Move America Forward, and take profound steps to end racism, end the homeless problem, end our war on minorities, end our lack of compassion, and end our outdated policies that widen the social divide. It is now time to choose the American people rather than publicly traded companies and their profits. It is now time for real change to occur.

Instead of being a “good” president, you have the power to become a transformative president, like Washington, Lincoln and FDR. You can create a legacy and implement changes that will truly “Make America Great Again.”

Sincerely,

Alexander Nachman

Compound In Cannabis Shown To Remove Toxic Alzheimer’s Protein From The Brain

Marijuana

An active compound found in the cannabis plant called tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC, has recently been found to promote the removal of toxic clumps of amyloid beta protein in the brain, which are thought to be precursors to Alzheimer’s disease.

advertisement – learn more

These findings support the results of previous studies, which found evidence of the protective effects of cannabinoids, including THC, on patients with the neurodegenerative disease.

According to senior paper author David Schubert, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, “Although other studies have offered evidence that cannabinoids might be neuroprotective against the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, we believe our study is the first to demonstrate that cannabinoids affect both inflammation and amyloid beta accumulation in nerve cells.”

What Exactly Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that eventually leads to extreme memory loss and can severely interfere with a person’s ability to care for themselves and perform routine tasks. According to the National Institutes of Health, it affects more than 5 million Americans and is a leading cause of death. It is also the most common cause of dementia. Incidence of the disease is expected to triple over the next 50 years.

The Study

The researchers tested the effects of THC on human neurons grown in the lab that mimic the effects of Alzheimer’s disease within the brain. Researchers remain unsure of what exactly causes the disease, but it’s thought to occur from a buildup of lesions, amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. Amyloid plaques sit between the neurons as dense clusters of beta-amyloid molecules, which are a sticky type of protein that can easily clump together, and neurofibrillary tangles are caused by defective tau proteins that clump into thick, insoluble mass inside the neurons.

Currently, it is unclear why these lesions appear in the brain in the first place, but there have been some studies that link inflammation of the brain tissue to the proliferation of the plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Researchers hope that if they can find a way to clear out the plaques as well as reduce brain tissue inflammation, they will be closer to creating an effective treatment for  Alzheimer’s disease.

“Inflammation within the brain is a major component of the damage associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but it has always been assumed that this response was coming from immune-like cells in the brain, not the nerve cells themselves,” says one of the team, Antonio Currais.

When we were able to identify the molecular basis of the inflammatory response to amyloid beta, it became clear that THC-like compounds that the nerve cells make themselves may be involved in protecting the cells from dying.”

Previous Research

In 2006, researchers at the Scripps Research Institute were able to find that THC actually inhibits the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that is responsible for producing them.

Another study out of Australia took mice that were bred to mimic symptoms of Alzheimers and gave them CBD from cannabis. The non-psychoactive cannabinoid caused a drastic improvement in memory within the mice tested. Although further study is necessary, early results are showing signs of memory improvement, and physical results will be tested next.

“Cannabinoids are the first and only class of drugs that have ever been effective,” said Gary Wenk, a professor of neuroscience, immunology, and medical genetics at Ohio State University

Conclusion

While this research has exciting potential for future treatments, so far it has only been demonstrated in neurons in the lab and not on an actual human brain. The next step for Schubert and his team will be to observe the link between THC and reduced plaque buildup and inflammation in a clinical trial. It is important to realize that there is hope, however, to treating this increasingly common degenerative disease.
